Our story

TrailPlanner.com is based in Bellingham WA, providing sustainable trail planning and design services throughout the U.S. We also help organize professional (or volunteer) teams to assess, build or rebuild trails and trail-related elements in parks, natural areas, communities or private developments.

We offer quick assessments and on-site consultations for projects of any size or complexity.  From regional trail systems for multiple, non-motorized users, to basic garden paths and stone or timbered steps, we can help you develop appropriate design solutions that are functional, affordable and sensitive to the environment.

Ken Wilcox, the founder of TrailPlanner.com, has been planning and designing trails and bikeways professionally since 1988. He’s been the lead planner for dozens of projects spanning several thousand miles of trails, greenways and bikeways in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Clients have included cities, counties, state and federal agencies, private landowners, developers, nonprofits and user groups.

Ken also has a background in land use and shoreline planning, as well as environmental assessment, GIS mapping and outdoor recreation planning. From 2011 to 2019, he served with a federal energy agency as an outdoor recreation planner in Washington, D.C.

He is the author of four hiking and walking guides and loves spending time on the trail, even when he’s not actually planning and designing them! He also enjoys cycling, kayaking, mountaineering and travel. He and his hiker-wife Kris are long-time residents of Bellingham WA. They lived for a time in Washington, D.C. and Alexandria VA before returning to Bellingham in 2019.
